LET’S TALK

ABOUT WHAT YOU NEED

Building Better Connections

Feelings of loneliness and isolation are commonly reported by gay men. Men tend to be more competitive in their relationships with others, can struggle with feelings of low self esteem, and have trouble processing traumatic events that may have occurred earlier in life. This may lead to the construction of a public persona that works to stop others from really getting to know you, while ensuring that you can’t be easily hurt. If you’re ready to move forward we can help you build better connections and better quality of life.

Relationship Health for Gay Men

The first step to building better relationships with others is understanding and developing a better relationship with yourself.

Whether you are looking to reduce harmful and ingrained patterns of behaviour, evolve a life away from the gay scene, or are looking for deeper emotional connection in your personal life, we can help you to explore in-depth your communication and intimacy concerns and help you attract the kind of partner you’ve always wanted.

Do You Need Help Coming Out?

So you’ve decided to come out of the closet, the metaphor for sharing with others your sexual orientation or gender identity. We sometimes call this “Inviting in.”

You may decide to do this in stages as you go through your own journey of self-discovery, or all at once as you become more certain of who you really are. You may admit only certain people or groups of people into your confidence, or decide to share your feelings with the greater world. These journeys can be extremely personal, conflicted and difficult to quantify.

Coming out as a bi-sexual or gay man can be particularly challenging. Internalising your own emotions or the strong desire to experience a “normal” life can lead to feelings of denial and a lifetime of regret, as well as the development of adaptive behaviours that may be self destructive.

Coming out later in life can also be very hard on former partners of the opposite sex. If you are struggling with coming out, you are not alone. We are here to listen, to support, to help process and finally, to help deal with the feelings and with the practical steps of moving forward to living your best life.

Meet Our

Out & Proud

Gay Male Counsellors

Stephen Blood

Stephen has been an active member of the queer community since the early 1990s, he has experience as a volunteer leading peer support groups for gay men and in LGBTIQ focussed telephone counselling.  Professionally, Stephen retrained as a counsellor 10 years ago and now works in therapeutic practice with gay men and other members of the queer community.

Stephen says: “I am proud to be gay.  It influences and touches much of who I am in the world, my relationships, my work and my social life.  However, that doesn’t mean that it is easy, and I have worked hard to find my place in all of this, including the support from other gay men as peers and counsellors.”

Stephen understands that for many gay men there have been battles fought and things too overcome in order to feel safe and develop and be comfortable in their gay identity.  Stephen believes that it is most important to understand that being gay or being queer is not the problem! How the world and its institutions and other people around us respond to being gay or queer is often the problem.

Stephen will work with you in a safe, supportive and caring way, that is fully accepting of your gay or queerness, wherever you are in your journey with it.  Stephen will work with you on what issues you are facing, be it issues of identity, sexual or gender expression, your relationships, lack of acceptance, isolation or loneliness, shame, impacts of religious upbringing, or impacts of behaviours that are not supporting you, and any other issue that is impacting you.

Stephen’s Qualifications:

For the last five years he has focused on helping people, specifically gay men, cope with trauma by using therapies such as EMDR and TEP. It reduces the power of emotions associated with traumatic events, helping you heal from trauma, grief, PTSD and other distressing life experiences. Transpersonal and Experiential Psychotherapy (TEP) blends the concept of transformative personal growth in association with therapeutic methods to promote self-awareness and a deeper understanding of one’s authentic self.

Richard’s approach to psychotherapy is holistic, collaborative, positive and empathic. Being a gay man, he understands the complexity of challenges faced by gay men in today’s world. He works best with individuals and can assist with addiction, relationship issues, anxiety and depression. He is also very much a dog lover, and through the use of grief counselling and EMDR and TEP therapies can help you deal with the impending death of a pet, then assist you to process the grief and sadness that comes with their loss.
